Ms. Audrey Aubrecht
Harmony Habitats Coordinator
South Allegheny Elementary

Meet Ms. Aubrecht

I am a retired South Allegheny Elementary Teacher and am the Harmony Habitats Coordinator. I taught for 37 years and retired in 2008. I have a B.S. and M. Ed degree from California University. I have been involved in the Harmony Habitats outdoor classrooms and program since 2003. The Cell Phone Tour in the Woodland Habitat and the Interactive Butterfly Box using the voices of students are my proudest additions to the habitats. This website ( www.harmonyhabitats.org ) I have created explains all our other accomplishments.

Since retiring, I have enriched my education in the environmental field. I completed training in 2009 and am now a Penn State Master Gardener. We worked closely with the Master Gardeners and now have a vermicomposting program in nine classrooms. The Master Gardeners also have helped with the Harmony Habitats after school lessons and have been a valuable resource. In 2009, I completed the Volunteer Naturalist Training Program with the Western PA Audubon Society. This prepared me to lead field trip hikes for students at Beechwood Farms. The Audubon Society is part of our outreach program.

I also have enjoyed developing gardening learning centers for preschool children. It is a great opportunity to create interest and enthusiasm for the outdoors at an early age. I now have two grandchildren who field test these activities!

My retirement has allowed me to focus on environmental education. I continue to seek update training to develop lessons that will inspire children to appreciate and protect our environment.
